Our Senior Caregivers Promote Dignity

A&M Home Care: In-Home Senior Care; Elder Care; Companionship; Respite Care; Personal Assistance.

The introduction of a caregiver in a loved one’s home needs to be handled with care and compassion to ensure their dignity is maintained.

Even when handled with care the change requires an adjustment period. Clients who have been self-sufficient their entire adult lives and have a strong sense of independence may have concerns that they are losing control. If not addressed these concerns will lead to mistrust and decrease the quality of life of our clients. Our caregivers are trained on how to reassure your loved one that their wishes are vitally important.

The process starts from the moment our caregivers meets your loved one. Our caregiver will always introduce themselves and ask your loved one how they prefer to be addressed. Assuming how a person likes to be addressed, even if well intentioned, is disrespectful to the person’s identity and can create unintended tension. Our caregivers are trained to be pleasant and respectful without being patronizing.

Companionship is a cornerstone to the care we provide. A caregiver will never make a client feel like a burden or be dismissive of a client but will actively engage in conversation and take a personal interest in the well-being of their client. This can be accomplished through active listening and participation in social activities. The simple act of resuming a conversation from a previous visit improves the companionship bond and improves the self-worth of our clients.

Our caregivers have respect for your loved one’s personal space and possessions.

Introducing a caregiver into a home can cause a sense of overcrowding or claustrophobia unless care is taken to demonstrate respect for personal space. Our caregivers will not barge into personal spaces, such as bedrooms, without first knocking and asking permission. While performing light housekeeping, our caregivers will ask before moving objects and will always return the objects to their original positions. This demonstration of respect for the client’s possessions improves a client’s self-worth and builds trust between client and caregiver.

A well cooked meal can be the highlight to anyone’s day. Our caregiver will ask your loved one for menu suggestions and favorites. Going the extra mile to prepare an appetizing meal that meets the specific dietary requirements of our clients is standard practice for our caregivers. Knowing that meal time is something to look forward to improves both the physical and mental well-being of our clients.

Our caregivers are there to provide personal assistance and are trained to do so respectfully.

Our caregivers are trained to provide bathing assistance while maintaining the dignity of their client. Our caregiver will communicate the bathing process to ensure the client understands the process and is comfortable that their dignity will be respected. Our caregiver will always allow time for their client to choose their daily outfit.  Just as we have our own personal style our loved ones have a strong sense of which clothing style matches their individual personality.

Our caregivers are trained to identify the signs of pain in their client. Restlessness, social isolation, and avoidance are just a few symptoms that can indicate a client is in pain. Understanding when a client is feeling pain is a key to noticing changes that need to be reported to family members and doctors.

Our goal at A&M Home Care is to provide personal care which improves the overall quality of life of our clients and their families and helps our clients maintain a strong sense of independence, dignity, and self-worth.
